Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is swinging into the top spot at the box office in its opening weekend. Sony reports that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse earned $51.85 million on Friday, $37.4 million on Saturday, and a projected $31.25 million on Sunday from 4,313 locations, including IMAX and PLF screening. That brings Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's opening weekend domestic box office total to $120.5 million, more than tripling the opening weekend total of its predecessor, 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is having the second-biggest opening of 2023 to date (beating Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), the best debut ever for Sony Pictures Animation, and the third-biggest opening for any Spider-Man film.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has been a hit with critics and fans, earning a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 95% from critics and a 96% audience score. ComicBook.com's Kofi Outlaw awarded Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse a score of 4.5-out-of-5 in his review. He writes:
"[T]he scope and ambition of this larger Spider-Verse story – plus the clear indication that it could very well stick the landing (and then some) in Beyond the Spider-Verse – also makes it hard to criticize Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse too extensively. After all, the biggest drawback to the film is having to manage the eagerness to get to the next one. In a world where franchise universes rule, that's still a big win."
